Welcome back GAFFA and hello Ella Barclay!
A success story from our pilot project in 2011, we are over the moon to welcome back creative precinct GAFFA to The Rocks Pop-Up.
An independent artists’ collective committed to nurturing cross-platform collaboration, collectivity and cohesion within the contemporary arts community.
Through The Rocks Pop-Up Gaffa will be featuring an installation by Sydney artist Ella Barclay. A culmination of her recent body of work, most recently shown at Sydenham Road Gallery and Art Space as a finalist in the Helen lempriere Travelling Art Scholarship.
Barclay’s work explores surfaces - especially the technological screen, the plasma membrane, through which we increasingly experience culture and interact socially. On the one hand this exploration of surfaces is nostalgic. What it laments is the unmediated experience and depth of human dialogue that is lost to a reality deferred into a world of appearances and fragmented information networks. On the other hand, Barclay’s work affirms the sublime experience and virtual possibilities of this self-same world of the screen.[Shane Haseman]
